Pipin, a project from Brisbane singer/songwriter Bec Hoole is an encapsulation of all things dreamy pop, her songs holding reminiscent flavours of disco that bring on 90's nostalgia. Based on a strong rhythmic foundation of dub and reggae, Kurilpa Reach blend in blues, neo-soul and rock resulting in an eclectic sound difficult to pigeon-hole into a single sound or genre. When approaching music, Kurilpa Reach have utilised their own interpretation of West End’s melting pot attitude, following in the footsteps of other genre-blending groups such as KOOII, Kingfisha and Laneous. Kurilpa is the traditional name for the South Brisbane/West End peninsula, meaning ‘place of the water rat’, with Reach referring to the Brisbane River that surrounds the area on three sides.
Kurilpa Reach can be seen as a reflection of this identity, with members from indigenous and migrant backgrounds. Traditionally a melting pot of ethnic communities, traditional owners and artists, West End has carved out a distinct identity and attitude that sets it apart from other surrounding areas.
